Advances in Dialysis Management

My name is William C Bauer. I'm not a doctor or a medical practitioner. I'm a Medical Device Quality Engineer who is certified to assess Quality Management Systems.

When my first wife Sharry was on hemodialysis ("D", for short),
I was her "companion".

During her 18 years on “D”, she faced many challenges & complications (C&Cs), some of which could have been avoided.

I will share WHAT I LEARNED so that other patients and their companions may benefit.

Dialysis Quality Management

What Dialysis Patients and Families Should Know

As a patient on “D” (10 years in-unit, 8 at home), Sharry experienced C&Cs, including:

  • Cramps or lightheadedness
  • Lifeline issues (minor)
  • Out-of-control blood test results
  • Hyperparathyroidism
  • Brittle bones, as well as
  • Surgeries (in- or out-patient), ER visits, and procedures, for:
  • Lifeline remediation, e.g., due to clotting, or infection
  • New Lifelines, e.g., fistula, graft, vascath or permacath
  • Femoral access (when her regular lifeline failed)
  • Intact parathyroidectomy
  • Hypocalcemia
  • Partial hip replacement, and
  • Other adverse conditions, e.g., heart- and lung-related

Sharry's practitioners often advised us of risks and preventive care, yet, many times did not.

So, we learned what we could or should have done after she met the C&Cs.

Some C&Cs may have been avoided, if only we were aware of those potential C&Cs and the preventive actions to take accordingly.

As a result, it became my passion (Sharry's too) to share what we learned, so that:

  • Other Patients and their Companions avoid learning the "hard way”, and so that a
  • Practitioner or Philanthropist establishes a first-of-its-kind Dialysis Unit with benchmark-setting quality of care

For Patients and your Companions:

I will share about how Sharry & I met and our lives together, including her medical history, and a typical day on-D.

I will explain dialysis terminology & concepts, ask questions to engage you, and suggest activities to enjoy.

I will also suggest Patient-led Initiatives to drive your own preventive care, improve well-being and quality-of-life.

The above details will soon be available via:

  • Amazon – read the book with its sequential topics, or
  • YouTube – watch the corresponding videos

For Practitioners or Philanthropists:

I have faith to meet an "Angel" who will leverage & implement my proposal to:

Establish and Operate First-of-its-kind Hemodialysis Unit(s):

Transient Care with Benchmark Quality at Resort location(s)

I first shared this proposal when I met with Mr. Donald J. Trump.
He had other priorities at his casino hotel, but acknowledged my intent.
I appreciate that as President, he issued an Executive Order for kidney health.

Yet, the Establishment and Operation of the First-of-its-kind Hemodialysis Unit awaits.

Here’s an example of a suggested initiative for the First-of-its-kind Unit.

Other suggestions will be available in “What I WISH We KNEW when my loved one was on DIALYSIS” and face-to-face.

If you are the Angel who will leverage my proposal, then kindly contact me.

I also invite you to enlist experts that I am blessed to know, including a:

  • Project Manager / Regulatory Consultant who establishes Dialysis Units from the ground up
  • Data-mining Genius who develops software to monitor & measure stats, and implement controls to achieve best-in-class objectives
  • Organizational Change Leader who delivers complex, enterprise-scale programs across Healthcare and Pharma
  • Management System Engineer who documents procedures for organizations in the medical device and aerospace industries
  • Resource Specialist who was the former Peer Program Lead at the National Kidney Foundation as a dialysis patient, as well as
  • Nephrology, Dialysis and Holistic Care Practitioners who share the passion

and yours truly who is a Quality Manager and Dialysis Patient Advocate

Example of a Patient-led Initiative:

Choose one or more C&C for which you and your companion seek corrective action or preventive action (CAPA).  Enlist your nephrologist as your partner to achieve the objective.

Dialysis Quality Management

Example of a Practitioner-led Initiative at the First-of-its-kind Hemodialysis Unit:

Choose one or more C&C for which you will institute preventive care.  Enlist your team to implement an innovative approach, set a benchmark for the industry, and enhance your brand name.
